About AWD Machine
AWD Machine is the cylinder head machining division of All Wheel Drive Auto, based in Bothell, Washington.
All Wheel Drive Auto was founded in 2005 and has grown from a small independent operation into a multi-location repair and performance organization specializing in Subaru, Toyota and most other Japanese brands. That background drives how we approach machine work—focused on what actually works in service, not just what measures correctly on a bench.
AWD Machine was built to support that same standard at the machining level. We work with modern aluminum cylinder heads, restoring sealing surfaces and valvetrain function so engines go back together cleanly and operate as intended.
What We Do
Resurfacing
Cylinder head decks are machined to restore flatness and the correct surface finish for modern head gasket systems. This addresses distortion from heat and wear so the head seals properly on reassembly.
Valve Jobs
Valve seats and valves are reconditioned to restore sealing and alignment. Seats are machined with multi-angle cuts and valves are refinished to match, bringing contact back where it should be across all cylinders.
Valve Seat Replacement
Damaged or worn valve seats are replaced and machined to restore proper sealing and geometry.
Valve Guide Replacement
Worn valve guides are replaced to restore alignment and support proper valve movement and sealing.
Flywheel Resurfacing
Flywheels are resurfaced to restore a clean, consistent friction surface for proper clutch engagement.
Cleaning and Prep
Cylinder heads are degreased and glass bead blasted to remove buildup and prepare the casting for inspection and machining.
Freeze Plug Installation
Freeze plugs are replaced as needed during the machining process.
Spark Plug Thread Repair
Damaged spark plug threads are repaired to ensure proper installation and sealing.
Equipment
Our machining processes are built around equipment from Rottler Manufacturing, a Washington-based manufacturer known for cylinder head and engine machining systems.
Our Rottler equipment is designed for accuracy and repeatability in modern engine applications. That alignment matters for aluminum cylinder heads, where surface finish and geometry directly impact gasket sealing and long-term durability.
Using this equipment allows us to hold consistent results across every head that comes through the shop.
Process
Each cylinder head follows a consistent workflow:
- Initial inspection and measurement
- Machining to defined flatness and surface finish targets
- Valve seat and valve reconditioning
- Final inspection before return
The end result is a cylinder head that installs cleanly and performs as expected.
